Post-War Athens

After the Persian Wars Athens and Sparta became "superpowers" of the Hellenistic world. While Athens was transformed into an extravagant center of culture and intellectualism, Sparta remained focused on their military. The video excerpt above is from a documentary on the rise of ancient Athens under Pericles.

Pericles rebuilt the Athenian acropolis, which included the Parthenon with Pheidias' Athene Parthenos still intact, and the Erechtheion. However, it was because of these expenditures that the Athenians found themselves underfunded when the war with Sparta began. While the wars came and went, at least some of the beautiful architecture of the Acropolis can still be seen.

Hello Mr. P,

I'm still banned from TP. But I was thinking. What do you think about starting our own blog, ThinkConservatively? We can set it up just like TP and post up hard hitting articles about libtards. We could both log in and post up articles. Staff editor 1: Dr. William Dog. Staff editor 2: Mr. President Makarios.

-Dr. Dog

Makarios,

Check out setting up a free blog with WordPress.

I have a blog with Blogger and with WordPress, and, generally speaking, I like WordPress better.

In addition, I get double the free "storage space" by setting up blogs with different hosts.

ThinkConservatively does sound like a bit of an oxymoron, but that might be a good thing.

Sergei Andropov said...

It's better than "Think Regress."

Sergei,

Are you insulting Think Progess?

ThinkRegress is one of the names that we conservatives call TP.

I checked out WordPress last night and it seemed even more limited than this. It was better in some respects, some of the basic templates had a more professional look, however with the "blogger" brand blogs you can edit the HTML on the template with the greatest of ease. I'm going to have to learn more about wordpress before I make a decision.

Hi. I'm back.

I just have a question. I am writing a report and I am just wondering how people remembered all the names of all the gods when they were praying. Did they have a directory? There are so many, wouldn't they get confused? What happens when they pray to the wrong one? Did they get zapped with a bolt of lightening or did something bad happen? This would be so confusing.

Doesn't Mount Olympus with all those gods living on it cut off from all the normal people seem a lot like our White House and President George Bush? He seems pretty cut off from all the normal people too, being all powerful. And just like Zeus, if you cross him he hits you with a bolt of lightening or makes you disappear in one of his secret prisons.
It is kind of scary.

PJ said...

--------------------------
1) They weren't libtarded.

2) Each temple was devoted to a particular God or Goddess. For example, "The Parthenon" was dedicated to Athene Parthenos (Athene the Virgin).

Different cities and tribes worshipped different Gods and Goddesses. It even varied from family to family, as they believed that they were descended from a particular God or Goddess.

goddess divine said...

If the gods on Olympus were cut off from the normal people, how did they get married? Were there priests allowed on the Mount Olympus too? Were they living in sin and having children out of real marriage? How could you be a god and live in sin at the same time?

PJ said...

How could you be a god and live in sin at the same time?
--------------

If a God does it, that means it's not a sin.

goddess divine said...

Did they have gay Greek gods? I know they had gay Romans. I just can't find that stuff in the books.

PJ said...

-----------------------

Yes, and you can find it in books.

Look up the myth of Apollo and Hyacinth.

goddess divine said...

I know George Bush isn't a god, but he talks to God and he says God talks to him, so does that mean whatever he does is not sin too? Because when I watch him sometimes he acts like he really is God. Maybe that is why he doesn't worry about sinning when he tells so many lies, because he thinks he is God and if God does it it isn't sin.
Now I get it. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

PJ said...

Why have you deleted all my comments?

You're off topic.

It's been fun, Goddess. But I think you need to read some Thucydides.

The Goddess asked a very interesting question there, Mr. P. And I have to admit, I am surprized that you have an article about the contributions of Solon on your site.
Wasn't he a bit "progressive" for your tastes? or are you slipping a bit in your old age?

PJ said...

Wasn't he a bit "progressive" for your tastes? or are you slipping a bit in your old age?
----------------

I'm not going to lie, just so the past is more to my liking. The Greek Gods "raped" men, women, boys, and girls, and Solon was progressive. It's history.

PJ said...

and you like to talk up this site.
--------------

Do I? I've only mentioned it to a few people.

Umbra, Blame Bush, maybe one or two more. That is, unless they come here first and mention something.

willyloman said...

There have been alot of "progressive" thinkers in the past, Mr. P.

You don't feature them prominately on your site...

I am wondering, why Solon?

PJ said...

I am wondering, why Solon?
---------------------------

I just started the site, give me time. I'm starting at the beginning and working my way through history. I haven't even reached Plato and Aristotle yet.

PJ said...

Is this like a class project or something, or is there some other connection between Solon and your personal political views?
-----------------
No. They don't teach Solon because there isn't much solid information about him. But, from what is known about him, he seems to be the first leader who really listened to the people before he made decisions. He didn't start Democracy but he was a forerunner, so he deserves recognition. However, rulers like Dracon, do not.

Anonymous said...

Salesman,

Makarios said you were here, so I decided to check it out. Apparently Zooey did too.

Good to hear from you.

Mak, where did the registration go?

willyloman said...

I don't know Mr. P... all this "democracy" talk. Are you sure you're Mr. P?
Solon?
"By giving common people the power not only to elect officials but also to call them to account, Solon appears to have established the foundations of a true democracy."
Now, it is arguable as to whether he is being given credit he didn't deserve, but, even you mention his ecconomic reforms, and it is common knowledge that he may have opened up the courts for the common civilian of the time.
Doesn't really hold true to form with all your "libtard" comments on the other site.
I mean, is it the impression of democratic liberty that is supposed to calm the masses, or what?

willyloman said...

Solon was the archon eponymous, period. He had the authority to what what he felt would be best. At the time, poor Athenians were forced to sell their families into slavery because they had fallen deep into debt. Solon's "seisachtheia" freed all who had been enslaved, which was a plus for the people, IMHO. But at the same time it was the aristocrats who really had the political power, because the poor had to work all day and could not always make their voice heard.

Despite all of that, Solon did not establish a true democracy in Athens, he merely paved the way.

Anonymous said...

I hope Hillary gives us a "seisachtheia".

Egg,

You're not a slave.

willyloman said...

Well, that is the argument..whether or not he really included common people in the court system and the governing body or not because he was an aristocrat himself. However, doesn't Plutarch write that he did?

And if Plutarch was correct, isn't that a democracy? You yourself mention that he limited land ownership to allow for more landowners and more citizens to have a say in the decisions of their govenment.

PJ said...

---------------------
No, he just did the people a solid. After Solon's rule was over, Pisistratus was tyrant of Athens, then Pisistratus's sons (Hippias and Hipparchus) shared power, etc. etc. It wasn't until the 5th century BCE that Athens became a democracy.

I'll chime in regarding Islam too, though how much depends on whether you focus exclusively on falsafah (which I know very little about) or discuss the religion as a whole (about which I am extremely knowledgeable).

PJ said...

Sergei,

I don't know too much about that either, except that al-Farabi was an avid reader of Aristotle and because of that influence, he (al-Farabi) determined that the best system of government (that is realistic) is a representative democracy. But there is about 1000 years to cover before I get to Islam so hopefully I will have a chance to read more on the subject.
